Meta Element Use in Search Engine Optimization

Meta elements provide information about a given webpage, most often to help search engines categorize them correctly. They are inserted into the HTML document, but are often not directly visible to a user visiting the site.

They have been the focus of a field of marketing research known as search engine optimization (SEO), where different methods are explored to provide a user’s site with a higher ranking on search engines. In the mid to late 1990s, search engines were reliant on meta data to correctly classify a web page and webmasters quickly learned the commercial significance of having the right meta element, as it frequently led to a high ranking in the search engines — and thus, high traffic to the web site.

As search engine traffic achieved greater significance in online marketing plans, consultants were brought in who were well versed in how search engines perceive a web site. These consultants used a variety of techniques (legitimate and otherwise) to improve ranking for their clients.

Meta elements have significantly less effect on search engine results pages today than they did in the 1990s and their utility has decreased dramatically as search engine robots have become more sophisticated. This is due in part to the nearly infinite re-occurrence (keyword stuffing) of meta elements and/or to attempts by unscrupulous website placement consultants to manipulate (spamdexing) or otherwise circumvent search engine ranking algorithms.

While search engine optimization can improve search engine ranking, consumers of such services should be careful to employ only reputable providers. Given the extraordinary competition and technological craftsmanship required for top search engine placement, the implication of the term “search engine optimization” has deteriorated over the last decade. Where it once implied bringing a website to the top of a search engine’s results page, for the average consumer it now implies a relationship with keyword spamming or optimizing a site’s internal search engine for improved performance.

Major search engine robots are more likely to quantify such extant factors as the volume of incoming links from related websites, quantity and quality of content, technical precision of source code, spelling, functional v. broken hyperlinks, volume and consistency of searches and/or viewer traffic, time within website, page views, revisits, click-throughs, technical user-features, uniqueness, redundancy, relevance, advertising revenue yield, freshness, geography, language and other intrinsic characteristics.

Search Engine Marketing – Meta Tags

If you start to panic when you see “HTML” and think that using HTML Meta tags is something that will be too difficult for you, relax. Using these tags is a big part of search engine marketing and is very important when it comes to using search engine optimization to help your website get more traffic. These tags are words, usually the same keywords or key phrases that you are using throughout your website in an effort to use search engine marketing and search engine optimization to increase the number of people who find your website.

The difference between Meta tags and the keywords and key phrases scattered throughout the rest of your website is that the these tags are tucked into the HTML coding of your site. No one that visits your site will see these keywords or key phrases. The tags are put into the HTML code of the website so that the spiders or bots that the search engines send out will find your website. The spiders that the search engines use to index and rank web pages will find those tags by following a long series of other words and phrases on other websites. Using Meta tags is important to search engine marketing and search engine optimization. Some search engines will assign a rank to a website based on how many times the keywords or key phrases appear and also where the keywords and key phrases appear on a website. So it’s important to put them at the top of your website so that search engine bots will rank your site higher than other sites.

Even if you are not experienced at creating HTML code or working with HTML code you can put Meta tags for search engine marketing and search engine optimization purposes on your website by yourself. Instead of looking at the normal view of your website you need to look at the source code. Once you are in the source code you can enter in the HTML Meta keywords and key phrases that you want to use. If you are using a website design software the software will usually prompt you to enter some tags and then you can just input the same keywords or key phrases that you have used on the rest of the site.

Search engine marketing and search engine optimization are really the best way to drive traffic to your website so even if you don’t know that much about HTML or don’t feel comfortable with HTML it’s important that you learn how to use these tags because having the keywords and key phrases that are featured on your site as Meta tags can bring in a lot of traffic for your website.

The best ways to make your website so popular with consumers that it starts to make a lot of money for you is to use tried and true methods like proper placement of HTML Meta tags, search engine optimization on the website and search engine marketing tools to increase your rank on search engine results pages.

What are Meta Search Engine Marketing

For all those who are not aware of it, the fact is that there are four different kinds of major search engine marketing forms, 1) the crawler based search engines, 2) search engine directories that are manually maintained. 3) the paid inclusion engines and 4) the hybrid or meta search engines.

As the name indicate Hybrid search engines are a combination of two search engine forms. The crawler search and the search directories. The Hybrid search engine marketing techniques make use of both the crawlers and the human search techniques to provide the best and the most relevant results to their search.

The biggest search engines today, Google and Yahoo are both hybrid search engines which make use of both the above stated technologies in their search engine optimization technique. As a matter of fact the two have eventually evolved over the years to become hybrid. Yahoo was initially a directory but today it gets additional search information from Google as well. Where as Google, these days uses open directory results to increase the value of their search results.

This kind of search engine marketing is also referred to as Meta Search Engine Marketing. These are parallel search engines that combine the search of a number of search engines and search directories at the same time and lay their results together.

The meta search engine marketing techniques are of great use to users when a small number of relevant searches are required. They combine the most popularly hit results of all these search engines and present them in one list. It is also of great use to the advertisers as they are able to make the most out of their search engine optimization techniques. The Meta search engines guarantee a greater number of hits and traffic generation than the other techniques.

Where there are benefits of having meta search engines, this search engine marketing technique also has a number of disadvantages. The biggest setback is that you can only use simple queries in meta searches.

I run my own site, don’t have lots of money to hire a SEO company to do my site optimization, I have done relevant links and worked on meta tags, etc… However Google is taking a long time to catch my incoming links, I ranked #7 on Yahoo for a very competitive keyword, MSN somewhere on the second page, I added an RSS page to distribute some articles I wrote and also added a XML site map that I submitted to Google.
What else can I do to boost my search engine ranking?
My site is about 4 years old and at one point I stopped acquiring incoming links and not too long ago I started getting more links. I am so exhausted and loose sleep over this, what can I do?
Comments are much appreciated.
Thanks in advanced!
Thanks for your comments, I did mention that I have some articles and content is not a problem on my site. Besides having plenty of content I also have the rss feeds pointing to my home page, however I control the articles that I want to publish on my home page (usually I publish articles that are relevant to my site).

I’m building an HTML site. I’ve followed just about all of the basic SEO rules, but do have a couple of pages within the site (not main, primary pages) that utilize frames.
I understand that frames can affect SERP rankings negatively, which is why I’ve kept the use of frames to an absolute minimum and have only used them on pages of lesser importance.

I’d like to prevent the search engines from indexing the FRAMED pages (but NOT the actual FRAME pages) so that they don’t show up as incomplete-looking or "dead end" pages in the SERP’s.

I’m planning on using the following tag to accomplish this:
<meta name=”robots” content=”noindex”>

My question is: Will this have any negative or adverse SERP ranking effects on the other non-frame pages that are meant to obtain the best possible SERP rankings?

Will use of this tag only in the framed pages negatively affect the site as a whole?

Any feedback is greatly appreciated!! Thanks!!

i update my sites on daily basis.. and there is another ambiguity that PR only have concern with back links not with the site content and freshness.. and i haven’t changed the title or meta tage as well. but i am really disappointed to get a lollipop of 0 page rank
