Namibnat is thinking along the right lines: produce GOOD content, publish it on your website and people will link to you.
But how will they read it if they can’t find it in the first place?
This is where you’ve got to give it a jump start, getting people to the content in the first place and this is best done through linking to your content. You’ll get more interested readers by posting a notice of your content on websites frequented by relevant visitors.
To find these readers
1. find relevant blogs and leave comments mentioning your new awesome content
2. relevant message boards
3. backpage.com and craigslist.org
4. social bookmarking websites like Digg.com
No matter where you decide to post a notice of your new content make sure you post it in the most relevant area of that website.
From there people will begin linking to the content in order to share it with other people who would also find it interesting.
Below I’ll list a resource about developing backlinks that’s much more detailed than my above content. If you have any direct questions you can email me at jason@seo.cc.

Links show that you have credibility, and the best links are links that come from credible sites. There are many ways that people deal with this question. The important thing is not to start posting links on ‘link farms’ and just random blogs that are offering link exchanges. Rather build good content and get to know others in your field in the blogging world. As your credibility grows they may want to link to you. If people want to link to you because your content is so interesting and compelling, then it is likely that the link is going to be good for your SEO.
One way to get links ‘easier’ is to write articles that are posted on online magazine type sites or to guest post on other people’s blogs. Of course you need some credibility for this to happen in the first place. I believe that it really comes down to producing good content first, and then getting links later.
