Making Your Relationship between You and Your Web Designer a Joyful Experience

Is it really possible to hire a web designer and manage to go all the way from the start of your website to the very end with out a moment of frustration and disappointment? I think it is! It is a matter of knowing how to explain your needs to your web designer and also allowing him to advice you what the best options are for you.

So let’s start by asking ourselves what a web designer needs from you;

It is good to start by informing your web designer of the business you are conducting. Giving him a brief description of what you do should be more than enough. It will help if you provide your web designer with links to your competitors. Let him know what you like and dislike of your competitor’s website.  Once you have shown your web designer links to your competitor’s websites, it will be a good idea to show him other links to websites you like. Let him know about your color preferences, layout and graphics you would like your website to have. Provide your web designer with the content for your website in an organized manner. The best way to give your content to your web designer is in a word format or text format and you should actually use a word file per page in you future website. Let say that you have 3 pages; Home, about us, and our mission then you should have separated files for each page. In addition to that you should include a separated file called instructions. You will use this file to explain the web designer how to proceed with the content you have given him. Give your web designer THE FREEDOM TO DESIGN! One of the major catastrophes in web design is when the client thinks he can design a website. Firs of all; web designers are not the same as graphic designers. There are many variables to consider when you design for the web. Designing a website is not the same as designing a paper flyer.
Allow your web designer to design, he knows better than you. The one thing you can do is to let him know if you like what he is doing or not, and make suggestions but always listen to what he has to say. A good web designer will confront you and your ideas if you are going in the wrong direction. There are several stages when designing a website; the first one is creating a mock up. Your web designer will create a sample template of your website to illustrate the layout, colors, and the position of all those objects that will make your website com alive.

This first stage is crucial. You need to be very positive that you like the mock up before you give the ok to start designing your website. The reason is very simple; a mock up is nothing more than an illustration. What comes after that stage is the real deal; converting the template into a fully functional website. Trust me when I tell you that you do not want to tell your web designer to change the color of the back ground once you have approved the mock up. Your web designer will most probably get a tantrum and after that he will have to charge you an additional fee for extra labor. One final issue which is major and contributes to the patience of a web designer is the grammar of your content. Web designers are not secretaries. A web designer will gather together all the information you have given him for your website and he will make this work on the web. If today you give your web designer the text that belongs to the about us page, but tomorrow you change your mind and you send him again new text for the about us page he will not be very happy.

I have been designing websites for a long time now and these are real facts that occur to me as well as to many web designers out there every day. You can have a web designer create a great website for you, but you need to know that everything that relates to the web takes a long time to accomplish so the more you help us the better your website will be designed.

Niche Website Marketing – The Basic You Need to Know

You see it almost everywhere and you shop their sites. Your on Google looking for a new golf putter and you come across a website that low and behold, only sells golf putters. It seems like this website was made just for you. They know the questions your asking about golf putters and they are providing the answers along with a suggestion as to where you might go to buy one. This is niche website marketing.

The plan is simple. Find a demand that has little or no significant competition and fill it with a website that offers answers along side affiliate advertising.

This type of business model works best with very small segments of a broader category. For instance, in the example used above choosing golf putters over golf equipment allows one to focus all their resources and time into creating a compelling resource for golf putters.

Trying to build a new website around golf equipment would ultimately lead to a website with hundreds of pages. If this website was not truly better than those already serving this demand you would end up with what is termed a “hollow” site.

A hollow website is one that offers little or no value over the competition that is dominating your chosen field. This type of website will find it very difficult to compete in the search engines and therefore generate any traffic.

Bye narrowing your focus you can create a website that is able to engage your visitors. If you can engage your visitors with unique content you can often times find a position in the top results returned by google and other search engines.

The most common strategy for niche website marketing is to select a small segment, write product reviews for each product in your segment and provide affiliate links along side these reviews.

Companies engaged in website marketing ‘should redesign their site for SEO’

Companies engaged in Website Marketing should start the year by giving their site a makeover targeted towards boosting search engine optimisation (SEO), it has been recommended.

Econsultancy urged firms to redesign their site in order to boost their ranking on search engines such as Google, but noted that they should seek assistance from a search engine optimisation firm if they are not confident of doing the task themselves.

“Speaking from experience, it’s very frustrating to be called in to work on a website’s optimisation just after a (completely useless) redesign,” writer Kevin Gibbons remarked.

“If you can’t do it, get help,” he added.

Mr Gibbons also underlined the importance of using keywords in content and page names, adding internal links and paying careful attention to spelling and grammar.

He advises companies to “work on their words” and rewrite their whole website, employing a copywriter if they were not too skilled at creating appealing marketing text.

Optimising the meta description tags of a portal is also an effective way to boost website SEO, Mr Gibbons observed.

Implementing keywords is another important aspect when redesigning a site, Mr Gibbons noted, advising companies to make sure they “know and understand” the phrases they intend to use before starting.

He advised that, rather than stuffing sentences with the most commonly searched for term, web marketers might get better results with long-tail keywords and more specialised phrases.

Free resources like Google Adwords were particularly useful when researching keywords, he added.

Google’s Matt Cutts recently discussed the value of using keywords in a site URL, explaining that while the order of the words does not matter the type of words used “does help a little bit”.

Mr Gibbons noted that intelligently applied pay-per-click (PPC) marketing can help to immediately increase visitor numbers.

Another avenue for increasing SEO is social media such as forums, blogs, Twitter, Facebook or LinkedIn or other relevant platforms.

Spending time on a relevant social platform can have “excellent benefits,” said Mr Gibbons, adding that they were a good tool for website promotion.

However, he added that this can be a slow burning tactic so it was important to dedicate regular time on an ongoing basis.

Spam Means Different- for different search engines

The word “spam”, in the context of search engine optimization
tips, refers to any unethical practice used to improve a page’s
ranking in search engine results. Exactly what is considered
spam?

Search Engines Define Spam Google defines spam as “trying to
deceive (spam) our web crawler by means of hidden text,
deceptive cloaking or doorway pages.” You can report sites you
suspect of spam at Google’s Report A Spam Result page.

Yahoo defines spam as “pages (that) are created deliberately to
trick the search engine into offering inappropriate, redundant
or poor-quality search results.” They have a pretty extensive
list of what techniques they consider spam at their Yahoo!
Search Technology Content Quality Guidelines page.

MSN Search gives a few spamming techniques “discouraged” by MSN
Search; among them are keyword stuffing, invisible text, or
false links.

Ask Jeeves/Teoma defines spam as “the practice of purposely
deceiving a search engine into returning a result that is
unrelated to a user’s query, or that is ranked artificially high
in the result set.” They give quite a few examples.

Spam Techniques To Avoid Invisible Text. Text that is the same
color as the background pages; enables site owner to place more
keywords on the page and attract more spiders. Sponsored Links

Equalizer Software Identify money keywords and find products in
niche markets.

AdWords Builder Software Generate more website traffic with

WordTracker Discover which keywords you should target here.
(Affiliate) www.wordtracker.com

Keyword Stuffing. Pretty much what it sounds like. Keyword
stuffing consists of placing as many relevant or irrevelant
keywords and phrases as you possibly can in content and Meta
tags. Unrelated Keywords. If you have a site about Depression
era glass bowls and your keywords include “Viagra” and “Britney
Spears”, that would be considered unrelated keywords. Doorway
Pages. Doorways are pages optimized only for search engine
spiders in order to attract more spiders, thus more users.
Usually optimized for just one word or phrase and only meant for
spiders, not users.

Tiny Text/Alt Text. Tiny text consists of placing keywords and
phrases in the tiniest text imaginable all over your site. Most
people can’t see them, but spiders can. Alt text spamming is
stuffing the alt text tags (for images) with unrelated keywords
or phrases.

Mirror or Duplicate Sites. Don’t duplicate your site, name it
something different, and submit it again. This is not only ill
advised, but it borders on stupid. Search engines will know if
you do this.

Submitting Repeatedly. Submitting your site to a search engine
or directory repeatedly in a short period of time is a great way
to get your site banned, or at least delayed.

Spam: Only Good For Breakfast To recap: spamming the search
engines may seem like the quick road to Easy Street, but it can
get you in big trouble and is usually quickly discovered. The
bottom line about spam and search engine optimization is this: a
person who is determined to get around search engines, inflate
their search rankings, or perform unethical SEO maneuvers is
asking for trouble. Avoid search engine optimization spam

Site Promotion Tools – Click Responsibly

You’ve heard the old adage, “You scratch my back and I’ll scratch yours”. The premise is if you help me then I will return the favor and help you. This is the notion behind “Click Exchange” programs available on the net.

Many online businesses see Click Exchange as a viable alternative to paid advertising. If Click Exchange works they may not need to alter their Search Engine Optimization (SEO) strategies either.

What is Click Exchange?

The selling point of Click Exchange is the fact that no money needs to change hands in order for you to be involved. Essentially Click Exchange means that while you are a member of the program you are assured a visitor to your site in exchange for your visiting other member sites.

Those using these types of programs do indicate a rise in site visitation, so at least on the surface this program seems to be a productive way to drive visitors to your site. Or is it?

What Does it Mean?

Click Exchange programs may mean an increase in site visitation, but it’s more akin to cotton candy than steak. It’s not very filling and won’t sustain you very long. By all indications Click Exchange programs are not a very effective site promotion tool.

For the most part the increase in numbers comes from unmotivated members who are simply visiting your site for a matter of seconds so they can receive a site visit in exchange then they move on to other arenas of interest.

If your idea of success is higher site visitation alone then Click Exchange might help you feel better about your site, but if you are searching for motivated customers who visit your site because they are actually interested in your products or service then you might want to stay away form Click Exchange programs.

A Better Approach

Virtually every other approach looks at long-term strategy. In a results oriented society it may be hard to think that any results from your site promotion activities may not be seen for some time to come.

Here are a few site promotion tools that actually will assist you in long-term results.

1) Use only legitimate Search Engine Optimization (SEO) strategies

2) If you want to advertise, Pay Per Click (PPC) is a better road to take

3) Make sure you use your website information on all emails and forum or blog posts

4) Submit your site information to multiple directories

5) Use press releases to target potential site visitors

6) Keep your eye on the consumer. Provide great customer service and support

7) Encourage the liberal use of backlinks to your site

These are just a few of the many site promotion tools available to you. In each case they promise a better quality of visitor than Click Exchange programs.

Remember – always click responsibly.

]]>
As Search Engines Grow Smarter, Will You?

As search gets smarter, tricks get cheaper and we get nearer to coming full circle to an original goal of Internet search: that content is, indeed, king. It cuts across the grain of some notions we’ve held in the industry for some time, that there are shortcuts aplenty in the hunt for better search rankings. Search experts at ICMediaDirect.com dissuade clients from thinking that they can or should fool Google and Yahoo. Instead, we show them solid methodology that works. Above all else, your website needs superior content that anchors your search engine optimization strategy.

Algorithmic innovation, much of it by Google’s engineers, has thankfully rendered search engine spamming a fruitless endeavor. This has made the search engine a far greater tool for us to use and, in turn, has sparked the online advertising industry.

Nevertheless, Google and other search engines closely guard their Search secrets. Their constant tweaking compels smart webmasters to not rely on keyword strategy alone. Your site must be prepared to weather the ensuing fallout from any change in web-crawler browsing instigated by their engineers in those far-off, unseen laboratories. Any quest for keyword perfection is folly by nature, since that success is fleeting.

Search engines take link relevancy into account when ranking webpages. As a search engine optimizer it’s important for you to keep your “white hat” on. This means, for the uninitiated, that instead of spamdexing or deceiving the search engine through trickery, you employ ethical means to achieve ranking. Crime doesn’t pay in the search world because deceptive sites get shown the door and no site can afford to pay that price.

Google recently caught BMW’s websites gaming the system and the company’s sites were essentially blacklisted from the results listings. Did BMW not have enough confidence in the quality of their cars and motorcycles or was their online optimizer getting too cute? No matter, it’s BMW’s problem; one nobody needs to have.

Your white hat optimization entails shoring up whatever online relationships you can with other sites for link exchange, promoting your site with new ones for more link exchange, and joining web directories. This is not an instantaneous process, like most SEO work, but it is indispensable for your long-term online planning.

After dashing any notion of SEO trickery from our repertoire we focus on content. Content requires actual work, anathema, perhaps, to those seeking quick rewards with no effort, but this work pays off. You’re charged with producing fresh, relevant content that – gulp – someone might even want to read!

I’ve yet to hear of a web crawling spider that purchases anything online. Until this starts happening (hey, we rule out nothing at ICMediaDirect.com), you should start writing (or rewriting) your website’s content with an ideal reader in mind: your customer. For instance, if you’re marketing rock-climbing gear, sell that helmet, weave the thrill of the sport into your language and not a language of sugar and carrots you believe will attract Google or Yahoo. Be genuine.

State the aim of your site’s business by using clear and direct language early in your text, or “up there” on the page. Indirectness or misleading intros may not only divert the attention of people and cause them to leave, but the same for web crawlers, too. State your business early. Remember: simple beats complex in the SEO arena.

The goal is to win people over. It bears repeating that loading text with a barrage of related keywords that doesn’t keep with a natural flow of language is not going to work, on any level. Did you know that search engines can pick out the poor structural balance in language? They actually pick out overly optimized sites. Those flagged sites can go fish because their ranking is then shot. The lesson here is to work with the system.

Now your content is written. After having a second (and third) person read it over to find any inaccuracies or grammar mistakes, you supplement its structure. It’s time to optimize the text with keywords. But not too much. While it’s okay for a reader to notice repeats of a word throughout the written content, it’s too much when it distracts from the message. Use keywords at the beginning, end, and in header text. Review your text and see where you might re-work some more keywords. Be creative and thorough in these efforts and do not to exceed a 20:1 prose-to-keyword ratio within the copy.

Search algorithms scan text, not pictures. Therefore, it’s important to front-load relevant text onto your homepage, even to a point where you might think there’s too much text. Don’t worry about that. Remember that first time visitors to your webpage who come via search engine are arriving because they’re looking for something specific. Your homepage isn’t a billboard attracting the attention of motorists. Your objective is to “close” on those already interested. If they’re not ready to read a couple of paragraphs, they’re not ready to buy.

This isn’t to say that images are unimportant. They can actually be a tremendous search resource. You should slip in keywords when filling out your image’s alternate text description. Make them fit the keywords of your site and try to have the description of the pictures match the keywords, as well. This way “Image Search” functions of search engines will provide any number of interested queries. This is an area that is a) not nearly as optimized as text and b) increasing in aggregate search numbers. A well optimized image selection for your site could pay off serious dividends, while random descriptions for your imagery will fritter this chance away.

Spellcheck. Use it, that’s what it’s there for. There is no excuse for a poorly written website that smacks of amateurism. Sloppy efforts tend to spook page viewers from doing business.

If you’re not up to writing articles for whatever reason, you can hire a professional copywriter for the job. ICMediaDirect.com has them, if need be, one shouldn’t be hard to find.

Any expense taken in regards to your website is a mere pittance when compared to the disparity in value between a well-written site and a poorly written one. Website quality is too important for a business to trifle with. A good web copywriter is well-versed in keyword utilization and can make your specific directives look natural and effortless.

Search engines are getting smarter almost daily and continue to level the playing fields in the process. Subsequently, Search Engine Optimization has turned away from gamesmanship and towards crafting quality websites. Those who put in extra effort will be the ones to reap the long-term SEO benefits and, ultimately, more business.

Good luck.

Site Promotion Through Web Awards

Website promotion is not an easy task, because thousands of new websites are created each day, each of them striving for a position in the first search engine results, some using ethical techniques, others try to fool the search engines. If you want to achieve a top 20 position you have to compete against spam content sites, black hat SEO sites, made for Adsense sites and powerful websites created by the most skilled web developers.

The good news is that are not so many websites of genuine quality out there, so webmasters who really focus on usability, valuable content, improving user experience and so on, do have a chance to reach the top positions. However, it is not enough to create the perfect website. The job is done when the website is known and recognized, when people come back, mesmerized by the information and design, in one word, quality. That’s also the moment when a website starts paying back for itself.

Webmasters and online entrepreneurs employ many tools to make a website known. From the simple directory and search engines submissions to complex advertising means, pay per click, banner exchange and ads, nothing escapes the trial. A less popular method is submitting websites for web awards. While many web awards are not really meaningful, there are a few that can mean a lot for the award wining website.

If you have a website and you are serious about doing business online, applying for web awards couldn’t hurt. Generally, awards show a commitment for excellence and quality, exactly what web users are looking for. The psychological impact is great. A web award is not just a pretty picture on your website, but a statement. It underlines values and encourages visitors to trust your company and make a purchase.

For example, a Webby award-wining site is actually recognized for excellence in Web design, creativity, usability and functionality. A World Wide Web Award serves the same purpose. Both these awards are prestigious and very difficult to win. They are significant because experienced web developers who make every effort to create compelling and innovative websites, for a better Internet, choose the winners. To have any of the two can bring important benefits to your website, including increase of traffic, media coverage (both online and offline), a boost of popularity and, as already underlined, enhanced public credibility.

Usually to qualify for a web award, a website needs to be developed according to the W3C Standards, to have original, quality content, to be spam and scam free, family and children friendly – eventually apply for a free ICRA label, to respect copyright laws and to promote moral and universal values. If you apply for a web award you have to make sure all your links are fully functional – that means no coming soon or under construction pages, no broken links, and no other technical difficulties (dead graphics and pictures, lack of proper alt attributes, heavy flash, etc).

Winning a web award could bring you recognition offline too. Just ad the award on your brochures, fliers and other promotional materials to let people know that your company strives for excellence in everything it does.
